Random Thoughts & Links

I have a theory that throwing pixels on the screen for a few minutes may clear my head, or inspire me somehow, and make actual work more palatable. Even if I’m wrong, I get to play for a bit. Thus, this.

  • When Brigit (my daughter, 3 years old) wants nachos made with yuca chips and “the yellow cheese” for breakfast, and also a banana, and I agree to the scheme…is this really preparing her for the world outside? I suspect it isn’t. It would have at least been more thematic if I’d talked her into a plantain.
  • Charlie Stross, whose blog I used to enjoy but somehow forgot about until today (dumb of me but not atypical), has a great idea for a reality TV show about book signings. Though I should add two caveats: (1) I don’t watch TV, and (2) mostly I liked his description of how actual book signings are scheduled. So, well, YMMV.
  • I got a link via email from Dr. Phil Maffetone, of all people, on why he doesn’t vote. Well, I don’t either, and for somewhat similar reasons, but I don’t want to get into that just now. Mainly I was surprised by the source…I read his site (and books!) for completely unrelated reasons.
  • Ken at Popehat tells us how he convicted a man for helping terrorists who now aren’t terrorists.
  • World Maker Faire New York 2012. That would have been fun. I didn’t go, though. Could have; I’m not far away.
  • Charles Hugh Smith with a somewhat counterintuitive take on ‘quantitative easing’. Not that it’s especially encouraging. But it’s interesting, anyway.

That’s all, folks. Have a good day.
