Weekly Challenge freebie #2: The Gorilla, the Goldfish & Everything

cover3Continuing with my weekly challenge: I’ll be posting a free story every Wednesday for the next year, and publishing them to Amazon a week after…if I can! This is story #2, ideally out of 52. Impressive, no? A streak like that just inspires confidence!

Did you like story #1, also known as You Sleigh Me? Well, I took it down yesterday so I could publish it on Amazon. However…you can follow the link to its brand-new page on my site. Really kind readers might go visit the story in its new home, note the links to various Amazon sites, follow one of them, and post a review…I say might. No obligation implied!

Meanwhile, the ideas behind this week’s story are detailed in the goofy giveaway post I made back in June. If you’re interested in that sort of forensic examination, it might be worth clicking over to read about it…but I recommend waiting till after you’ve read the actual story. (Although I’m not actually controlling your computer here. It’s up to you in the end.)

The Gorilla, the Goldfish & Everything

Sometimes good intentions lead to bad places. On the other hand, bad intentions often do the same. But, either way? There’s often room for interpretation. And experimentation. As for the results, well, you find out afterward, don’t you? And then you go on from there. So does this story. It’s near-future science fiction, with no message whatsoever. But it does possess a species of humor…

The title is an homage to John D. MacDonald’s “The Girl, the Gold Watch & Everything,” though the plot is unrelated. Probably.

I’m making all my stories Amazon-only for a while. Their “Kindle Unlimited” deal is very nice for short fiction. I hate to leave people out if they prefer buying stuff at non-Amazon sites, but…(1) nearly all sales and downloads, for me, have always come from Amazon, (2) while I’ve had issues with Amazon, they’ve been very responsive in dealing with them, (3) I can’t say that for any other online distributor (well, Smashwords is actually pretty nice), and (4) this may boost visibility at Amazon…kind of the core of my business. If you really really hate the idea, please let me know.

I’m gonna post this link around. I really like the fish concepts. And I’m reading it aloud. NO word clutter, so don’t change a thing.

    Thank you.

Thanks! And I read my stuff aloud too…not the blog posts, but the stories & books. Glad to hear it’s working, at least for two of us! {8’>

Harlan told us to read aloud. I believe in Harlan. Tho, he’s a bit of a twit.

But then, so are we all.

    I won’t blow anything up, I promise.

I will..pimp you. That’s a new link on my wattpad. Sung to Coldplay’s “Fix you” which I’d been listening to, because of a John Lock fanfiction I am fiddling with. Maybe I should sing a video. *laugh*

Is this mode of communication safe from the bureaubots? Good stuff. I wouldn’t mind reading a longer story about these same characters.

    • David

Probably not safe, no. So…too bad for you, huh? Thanks for playing though!

For all the other people, who may still be with us in the future: while I was writing I kept thinking about ways this story could become a novel. So maybe I’ll pick it up again at some point. It’s still very much on my mind–of course I just wrote it late last week. {8’>

If anybody’s keeping track, I have no idea of what next week’s story will be. I ain’t worried though.

SIMply entertaining. I’m with Tom. I would enjoy an expansion of the story. Stories about what our future world will be like are one of my favorite types.

Mine too. I have so much stuff I want to write, though. Guess I need to learn to work faster.
